Material Science of Surgical Mesh
Surgical mesh is a medical device used to provide additional support to weakened or damaged tissue. The choice of mesh is critical to the success of the repair.
Synthetic Meshes
Polypropylene: The most common material. It is non-absorbable, permanent, and triggers a "fibrotic response," where the body grows scar tissue into the mesh to lock it in place.
Polyester: Provides high strength but may be more prone to infection if not handled correctly.
Biologic and Biosynthetic Meshes
In cases where the surgical field is infected, synthetic mesh cannot be used because bacteria will colonize it. Biologic meshes, derived from porcine (pig) or bovine (cow) dermis, are used because they are eventually absorbed and replaced by the patient's own living tissue.
