The Role of Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB)
raditional CABG is performed "on-pump," meaning the heart is temporarily stopped to provide a still, bloodless field for the surgeon to perform micro-suturing. This requires the use of a heart-lung machine.
Cannulation: Large tubes are inserted into the right atrium and aorta to divert blood.
Cardioplegia: A potassium-rich solution is infused into the coronary arteries to arrest the heart.
Oxygenation: The CPB machine filters, oxygenates, and regulates the temperature of the blood before pumping it back into the systemic circulation.
Weaning: Once the grafts are complete, the heart is restarted, and the patient is gradually transitioned off the machine.
