Albumin – The Essential Volume Expander and Carrier
Albumin is the "workhorse" of plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMPs). Produced in the liver, it performs two critical roles: maintaining oncotic pressure (keeping fluid inside the blood vessels) and acting as a transport vehicle for various substances.
Clinical Indications
Albumin therapy is often a second-line treatment but is life-saving in specific acute scenarios:
Hypovolemic Shock: Used when a patient has lost significant fluid due to trauma or surgery and crystalloids (saline) are insufficient.
Severe Burns: Used after the first 24 hours to restore protein levels lost through damaged skin.
Cirrhosis and Ascites: Helps manage fluid buildup in the abdomen by pulling fluid back into the circulatory system.
